Fluconazole is used to treat serious fungal or yeast infections, including vaginal candidiasis, oropharyngeal candidiasis (thrush, oral thrush), esophageal candidiasis (candida esophagitis), other candida infections (including urinary tract infections, peritonitis [inflammation of the lining of the stomach], and infections that may occur in different parts of the body), or fungal (cryptococcal) meningitis. It is also used in children on life support called extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). This medicine works by killing the fungus or yeast, or preventing its growth. Fluconazole is also used to prevent candidiasis in patients having bone marrow transplants who receive cancer or radiation treatment.
Direction to Use:
DIFLUCAN® is administered orally. Use in AdultsFor vaginal candidiasis, fluconazole may be administered in divided doses orally. For each day at the time of first treatment, treatment should be continued for one to two weeks, depending on the dose being given. During and after your treatment, your doctor may monitor you more often, and your symptoms and doctor would prescribe you extended courses of treatment.
Side Effects
Common fluconazole side effects include nausea, headache, and a slight metallic taste in the mouth. Nausea results from fluconazole wear-and-tear, so you may feel hungry or dizzy before or after taking these side effects.
Fluconazole may also cause a change in the balance of certain nutrients that are secreted by your liver (such as B12 and DHA) in your diets. Be sure to take these things in addition to your fluconazole to ensure that they are available at all times. If you notice any of the following, contact your doctor immediately: Tiredness in your muscles, especially after work or school, and dizziness rarely followed by lightheadedness or fainting; or a bad headache, which may need to be treated with antibiotics. Contact your doctor at once if you have the following symptoms: Fluconazole may cause a severe decrease in red blood cells (etitive cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP)). For example, you and your hematologist will both be treating your body with fluconazole. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any side effects: Irregular heart rhythm (irregular heart muscle rhythm; QT prolongation, torsades de pointes), feeling unwell; weakness; numbness or numbness in the extremities; followed by headache; or a skin rash, itching, or urination, which may be severe enough to require immediate medical attention.
